Dartmoor

tor dartmoor

Ancient outcrops of granite rocks, tors, occur at various spots. These outcrops have had special significance in the history of the moors. For instance they used to measure the setting of the moon for agricultural purposes and creating a calendar. There are many myths and legends which are fascinating to read.

Dartmoor is a wonderful place for visitors to go to from Exeter. It has been a National Park since 1951 and is approximately 368 square miles. There are beautiful views and rugged mountains, fascinating animals like the famous Dartmoor Ponies and sheep along the roadside. Evidence of past civilizations abounds. It is great walking on the moors and taking in all the natural beauty, or having a picnic on the banks of a babbling stream in sunny weather. Whatever the weather, but especially on a cold wintry day, it is very pleasant visiting a cosy inn with low beams and cheerful atmosphere, sharing a meal with the locals.
